Grip control and wheel/tire trade-off

I'm in discussions with the local dealer in Spain about a new Berlingo Multispace in the version they are calling the 20th Anniversary.  It's kitted out at the top level -- one above "Feel" -- but the van is still cheap from my perspective.  The primary reason I am interested in this version is that it has 7mm front / 10 mm rear additional ground clearance.  I want a bit more clearance to use unpaved roads (I had a truck that was 2WD but great clearance and believe that clearance is more important than 4WD for most situations that I would get into.  In Spain you can get the Berlingo in the Dangel 4x4 version but the price delta is more than is justified for my needs.)

My question is whether to get the "grip control," which requires a downgrade in the wheel/tire choice, presumably to keep the price of the option lower.  Without grip, you get 16" alloys with 215/55R16.  With grip, you get 15" steel with 205/65R15.  The grip option tires are "mud and snow" tires, which I have not seen and don't know how aggressive the tread is.  I can't remember the price of the grip option, but is wasn't significant, again presumably because of the cheaper wheels and tires.

Not related to the raised suspension, I am considering the grip option for help on slippery boat ramps and the occasional slippery road (more so in the north of Spain and up in the montains).

Does anyone regret getting grip control, either because it doesn't help much or is problematic, or regret not getting it?

Any views on the wheel/tire trade-off?

I've searched this forum as well as I could and know that there are some who view grip control as a pricey software gimmick and others who have benefited from it, but I wanted to raise it anew.  I also know there are opposing views on steel vs alloy, and as someone who had a car with alloy and a truck with steel, I would think steel is more appropriate for a vehicle of this type.  Tires I don't really have much of a view on, other than to say that as I get older I drive more conservatively and am more interested in utility than performance, which is of course why I am looking at the Berlingo.

Thanks.

Central locking rear door

Just for future reference today amongst other issues the rear sliding door wasn't locking. I cleaned the electric contacts with acetone on both the door and post with a cotton bud. All doors are now locking and unlocking fine. Will clean and GT85 the working and sliding parts on the doors tomorrow. Angel

1999 DW8 - How do I loosen the aux belt tensioner?

I'm cheating a little as I have a DW8 Dispatch, but I know a lot of Berlingos came with this engine.

I tried changing my aux belt a while ago but couldn't figure out the tensioner at all. I had to throw in the towel, but now I need to change my PAS pump so it's becoming relevant again.

On my previous vehicles it's been easy - my Peugeot 106 had a couple of bolts underneath, and my 806 had a self adjusting one.

This one I just can't figure out at all.

Here's my belt and pulleys. Bottom is obviously the crank shaft, the top one just in view is PAS, the one to the right is the alternator. I don't have A/C.

Here's my alternator setup on Citroen Service:

Here's a diagram I found online (mine looks identical to the top middle one. This one seems to indicate that the top roller is the tensioner:

And then there's this that seems to back that up:

How the hell do I get the thing off?

Column control replacement

Hi Folks,

My 2012 Multispace randomly washes the rear screen and activates wiper. Its intensely annoying, sometimes washes and wipes 1/2/3 times, all of this without me touching anything on the column Dodgy

Will go for weeks without doing it then it happens numerous times on a journey.

I've taken to whacking the underside of the column support and this sometimes stops it, so I'm thinking its something on the column switch assembly.

So a couple of questions:
- do you think it is the column switch or something else ??
- Any guides for removing the assembly? (I think I know how the steering wheel comes off)
- Any idea what I should be looking for on ebay as a replacement? (it has 2 arms plus a wee stubby arm for radio)

-Thanks !

Cheers
Gerry

Does any of these boxes work?

I'm thinking this one specifically:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Box-CITRO...vQ&vxp=mtr

It would be nice to have a bit more torque now and then.
It's not exactly fun on steep hills with a full load...
(Yeah, 1.4i, 1999 model)

Better fuel economy as some promises wouldn't hurt, either...

Balls for joints...

Hiya All...

I am struggling to get to the bottom of why the steering has a strange 'wander'.. All seems straight but I have to tilt the steering wheel over to the right to get the van to drive straight, the N/S front tyre is wearing on the outside but the tracking is fine.

I noticed on ebay, while just flicking around, like you do, that there is different lower ball joints for power steering and non power steering so I'm wondering if  have inadvertently fitted a lower ball joint for non power steering at some stage by mistake..

Does anyone have any idea what the difference between the ball joints would be ??

Rocker box oil leaking..

Hiya All...

am getting a bit peed off with replacing the sealant between the rocker box and head on my DW8B..

Now I know it's not a difficult job but cleaning off the oil sealant and prepping for the fresh sealant is time consuming if you want the sealant to have a chance of being effective..

I might try a different sealer so any recommendations for one that works for the long term ? I'm not interested in chucking some silicone sealer on it.  I have tried high temp instant gasket, Reinzosil and my next product will be Dirko.. Any experience with theses ? What do you use ?

Rails and Rack

Considering a roof rack for my Multispace, a vast range of prices, with Citroen rails topping £200.

I've spotted these,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-BERLIN...2707680070

Any one any experience, or of anything similar ?

Ideally I want to either have a roof box on or occasionally bikes.

Fairly local to me so will have a gander when some time.

Hi there, hello and just to say I,m into my third week of Berlingo ownership and feel as though I,m slowly being converted to a "Berlingerer!" Impressed with the amount of space and how easy everything seems to work. I,m running the 2.0 Hdi which seems more than capable (only done 75000mls with two owners since 2004). The most annoying thing I,ve found so far is RATTLES !!, particularly in the rear tailgate area, any advice more than welcome! Wink

Very happy to find this forum.I have had a 2001 Multispace 1.9D since well...2001 (from new) . Likewise my parents since 2000. Both super reliable `does what it says on the tin` cars. I have done almost all the servicing and repairs on our car and some on the other. Both going strong at 94k and 124k respectively with no sgn of rust. All of this despite them living outside all their lives and doing both short journeys and towing caravans.  Best wishes Andrew.

The Bombus Beater

I've wanted a small panel van for a while anyway so finally I got to live out my dream.
But I had some requirements, black, petrol and glass in the rear doors.
Not a easy task in a world that just contains white, diesel ones.

But I found my little gem about 4 hours drive away from home.
A black, petrol with glass rear doors, 2004 Berlingo a.k.a. The Bombus Beater with both
reasonable state, milage and price.
The clock was 143000km/88850miles and I paid 1500£ for it
A little beat and some DIY, but nothing I can't handle myself or with help of friends.
Formerly owned by a chimney sweeping company, which explain the VERY unusual color choice when new.
Gonna be the perfect companion for both simple A->B drives, commuting and all the future,
often rough, transports associated with renovating our house.

Always On Power Socket

I've been reading reviews on dash-cams and came across this comment in a (Techmoan) forum post:

On Peugeot cars, at least on my 406 V6 and also the 307 Griffe, you can move fuse F1 one notch to give constant +12v on the cig. outlet if you wish, default is (as usual) only +12v via the ignition key.

I wondered if its possible to do something similar on my B9 Berlingo, can anyone advise please?

Cheers,

Matt

Stereo intermittent fault

Anyone any ideas what might be causing the radio to work intermittently.? Never had a issues with it until a few days ago. It powers up no issues however no sound comes from it and struggles getting a signal. Lock and leave it and it works fine, drive back from work and it has the same issues? Was thinking of upgrading it to a DAB radio soon but curious to get it sorted.

Battery life question

Hi all.  I've got seven years on my battery and with winter coming on I was wondering what peoples experience is with battery longevity.  Car is driven several times a week on 30-60 minute trips and the battery never falters but, I don't want to take the chance that I drive somewhere out in the boondocks and then it goes totally dead.  So, whatcha y'all think???  Thanks in advance

Remap

Just for some background first....

I've got a 2.0 HDI on a 06 plate, this year it's had as reported on here a recon gearbox, new clutch kit, all the gear levers (3) and the long gear rod, selector and alternator.

Now the EGR valve has gone on me, I had to call the AA out who have opened it or closed it, can't remember which, so I could drive it OK and it's been OK now for a few weekss, so I'm not overly understanding what its point is? But no doubt I need a new one so I've contacted Citroen for a price and availability who are coming back to me.

Now, I read somewhere that someone with a Berlingo had a remap, I'll be honest and state I hadn't got a clue what it was so after some research I now know.  Anyway, it improved his overall performance and improved his MPG by 15%, so being a courier this got my interest.

Now it would seem I can't get the remap done until I sort out the EGR valve, but the question beckoned, is the remap worth it?

I drove to Bo'Ness (Scotland) yesterday form Coventry and then into Salford on the way back along with Birmingham consuming 670 miles!  I was nice and steady at 70-75mph all day  on motorways so no flat footing, but I've averaged 35mpg at best which I don't think is very good?  This equates to 435 miles that I squeezed out of the tank filling to the brim and going into the red as far as I could risk, possibly a little more in their but I filled up (£70) and that was the outcome in reference to my mileage.

Whats the point of the EGR and is it affecting my MPG?

Will a remap help the performance on an old berlingo and improve its MPG and is the MPG (35) low for any other reason?

Thank you..

1.9d XUD auxiliary belt tensioner

Hi again
Just a quick question, how is the spring loaded aux belt tensioner removed on the 1.9d multispace? Seems to be pivoting on a central nut but cant see any other bolts from the top/side. The last garage I took it to replaced a perfectly good tensioner with a nasty bit of crap from china.  Its got side to side movement now and never fitted the belt correctly in the first place.

ANy guidance would be appreciated ta. Its an x reg. 2000.
